Primacoustic Nimbus Paintable

Primacoustic Nimbus is a rectangular ceiling-mounted sound-absorbing panel, ideal for acoustic treatment in any room, available in the "Paintable" finish. Each panel measures 61 x 122 cm and is 38 mm thick. In this version, the panels feature a 90° edge. All mounting hardware is included with Primacoustic Nimbus.

All ceiling panels are made with 38mm-thick, high-density glass wool (96 kg/m³) for exceptionally uniform sound absorption. The glass wool is enclosed within a protective micro-mesh, and the edges are resin-coated to minimize the release of glass fibers (which are non-toxic). The acoustic panel is then covered with an acoustically transparent fabric or finished with the paintable Absolute White coating.

As with all Primacoustic panels, the Clouds are laboratory-tested for acoustic performance and fire safety, achieving the most stringent Class A/1 rating in North America and Class B in Europe, making them safe for use in all types of installations.

Nimbus panels can be suspended horizontally from the ceiling in spaces such as restaurants, lobbies, gyms, or any other space where discreet acoustic treatment is desired. Installation is easy. Each kit includes two high-density glass wool panels plus all the hardware needed to mount them horizontally from the ceiling. The panels can also be mounted on walls using Surface Impaler brackets or installed as vertically suspended baffles using Corkscrew anchors (sold separately).

How Nimbus Panels Work

Primacoustic Nimbus absorbs the sound energy produced by speakers by converting it into heat. The sound energy, which travels through variations in air pressure, penetrates the panel, causing the tiny glass fibers to vibrate and generate heat. This thermodynamic energy transfer effectively absorbs direct sound energy and prevents it from reflecting back into the mixing position (sweet spot).

On its own, the 38mm-thick glass wool panel is 100% effective for frequencies between 400 Hz and 20 kHz. To improve sound absorption and control an even broader frequency spectrum, the Primacoustic Nimbus can be angled to vary the air gap between the Nimbus and the ceiling. This allows the panel's surface to also absorb any reflections from the ceiling.

Surface and Corner Impaler Mounting System

Primacoustic's Impaler system is designed to provide users or installers with a simple, quick, and effective method for mounting fiberglass acoustic ceiling panels on walls as well, without causing significant damage to the surface. The galvanized steel impaler features a series of protruding, sharp prongs that penetrate the panel to secure it in place during installation. To ensure the panels do not shift after installation, we recommend applying a small amount of adhesive to the tips of the Impaler during the mounting process; this adds an extra layer of security and reduces the risk of tampering. The Impaler mounts are secured to the surface using standard anchors and screws for concrete or drywall. The package includes a set of drywall anchors with matching screws.

What does "Paintable" mean?

If you ask anyone in the industry what the most common customer issue is, they'll surely tell you it has to do with choosing a color. Primacoustic Paintable panels were designed as a neutral solution that allows the end user to decide on the color after the panels have been delivered. This eliminates uncertainty about color selection and opens the door to creative use of textures and finishes.

Primacoustic Paintable is an innovative line of acoustic panels finished in Absolute White that can be repainted in any color you prefer! The design starts with the same high-density glass wool core (96 kg/m³) used in the Broadway series panels. Instead of wrapping the panel in colored fabric, the front and edges of the Paintable panels feature a breathable latex finish that allows them to be spray-painted or printed on without affecting their acoustic performance. The unique coated surface of Paintable panels can be printed at any print shop. Using a UV flatbed printer capable of handling a thickness of at least 5 cm, you can apply custom graphics, photos, logos, or an image of your choice to the front of the panel. This high-resolution print applies a thin coating of vibrant colors without compromising the panel's acoustic performance. Full customization of your acoustic treatment is now possible!

Primacoustic Nimbus Paintable Documentation and Certifications

All Primacoustic panels are laboratory-tested for acoustic performance and fire safety. Class A/1 fire-rated, they meet the stringent ASTM-E84 and CAN-UL S102 requirements for flame spread and smoke development. This makes Broadway panels safe for use in commercial, government, and institutional installations.

Absorption coefficient of Primacoustic panels

  • Are Primacoustic Acoustic Clouds panels safe to handle? I’ve heard that fiberglass can cause irritation.
  • That’s actually true! That’s why all Primacoustic acoustic panels are fully encapsulated and have resin-hardened edges. This ensures that the fiberglass is completely contained. Fibers may be released when cutting the panels. If you choose to do so, we recommend wearing gloves, safety glasses, and a mask while working on them.

Are the Absolute White painted panels fire-resistant?

  • Absolutely.

What is the difference between the Nimbus and Stratus panels?

  • They are very similar. The Stratus features a special aluminum frame that allows you to join several panels together to create a particularly large “cloud.” This type of setup is primarily used in recording studios. The Nimbus is a general-purpose acoustic panel, so it is not specific to any particular application.

Can I use a Primacoustic Nimbus panel as a suspended baffle?

  • Of course—simply use the CorkScrew mount to hang the panel, and use the pre-assembled SlipNot cables for quick height adjustment.

Can I use Primacoustic Nimbus panels as wall panels?

  • Yes. Just add Surface Impalers for mounting.

Can I glue the cloud panels to the wall for a permanent installation?

  • Yes. Just apply construction adhesive and use the snap-on Impalers to hold it in place while the adhesive dries.

Can I drill a hole in a cloud panel to add a light fixture?

  • Yes... but make sure it has a proper steel housing designed for use inside an insulated drop ceiling. Ask your retailer for the best product suited to this specific application.
