AES/EBU is a standard format for digital audio, used to interface different devices with one another. Officially known as AES3, it takes its common name from the fact that it was jointly developed by the Audio Engineering Society (AES) and the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). This format was first introduced in the early 1990s, with subsequent revisions through the early 2000s. The standard also defines various types of connectors used by the equipment. A related standard, called S/PDIF, was developed as a consumer version of AES/EBU, featuring more common connector types, and is now part of the overall AES3 specifications.
