Amplification in the Utopia Main 212s

Because main monitors are often ceiling-mounted (soffit-mounted), they require external electronics. These patented, rack-mountable amplifiers on the midrange and treble use a combination of Class H design and current-mode amplification, providing the most natural and transparent amplification possible for a loudspeaker. By controlling current instead of voltage, one can directly adjust the force applied to the diaphragm, eliminating any unwanted artifacts. These amplifiers, combined with analog crossovers, achieve the lowest distortion levels (THD) ever measured in an anechoic chamber.

Adaptable to any type of installation

What's more, on-site optimization, necessary to adapt to room acoustics and placement, is applicable via the functions tab accessible in the amplifier. Here you will have 2 parametric equalizers (PEQ from 20 Hz to 1 kHz), volume adjustment for each driver, low-shelf and high-shelf filters, a ceiling mount compensation filter, and another filter that allows adaptation to the possible sealed or open configuration of the SLRs. Other available functions include deactivation of the front LED and standby mode.

FocalUtopia Main 212: the transducers

Two 5 midrange drivers with M-shaped W membranes, both amplified by 180W RMS in class H, offer extreme rigidity due to the shape and materials used in their construction. This technology, combined with a powerful magnet, results in a precise, resonance-free midrange with virtually zero distortion, for dynamic performance and transparency that result in extremely accurate sound reproduction.

To enhance rigidity and precision, we find Focal's own Tuned Mass Damper and Infinite Acoustic Loading technologies in the 1.5 M-shaped Beryllium Tweeter for excellent transient response and minimal distortion that greatly reduce acoustic fatigue.

The 2 long-excursion 13-woofer drivers, each amplified by 500W RMS Class D, offer a wide and precise extension in the low frequencies, also supported at the accurate insertion inside a massive, 30mm MDF cabinet with optimized bass-reflex ports. Available port plug accessory: lets you choose between sealed configurations for greater precision or open for more energetic bass.

Robust, optimized cabinet

The Utopia Main's massive cabinet is made of 30mm-thick MDF panels, reinforced with an intelligently designed network of supports to eliminate any warping, including quarter-wavelength resonance reduction systems: thus ensuring precision even at the highest SPL levels.

  • Focal Utopia Main 212 is a top-of-the-line speaker pair for professional recording studios. A 3.5-way model with a driver configuration that employs 2 woofers, 2 midranges and a tweeter. Max SPL is 123dB, while the frequency response ranges from 28Hz to 40 kHz. The separate, supplied, rack-mountable amplifiers offer power distributed as follows: 500W RMS Class D on bass for each woofer, 180W RMS Class H on each driver for midrange, 140W RMS Class H for treble:
