SpeakON is a type of electrical connector manufactured by NEUTRIK and used in professional audio systems to connect amplifiers and loudspeakers. It is preferred over banana plugs (and other types) because it ensures a secure connection, thanks to its twist-lock mechanism, which ensures a stable electrical connection between the two parts and provides good protection against accidental short circuits in both the male and female connectors, in addition to being generally more solid and robust. Cables are terminated in the SpeakON connector by soldering or by screwing them into terminals, depending on the model. There are several types of SpeakON connectors, ranging from a minimum of 1 pair of contacts (2-pole) up to a maximum of 4 pairs (8-pole) for carrying power signals, allowing a single cable of appropriate size to wire an entire multi-way speaker system, for example, in 4-way multichannel systems with subwoofers, woofers, midrange drivers, and tweeters, or-more rarely-with different impedances or power ratings depending on how the system's various speakers are connected (parallel, series, or mixed). Compared to a jack connector, the SpeakON does not cause short circuits between the contacts when plugging in or unplugging, which can damage the amplifier when a signal is present.
