The Shure MV6 Gen 2 is a USB-C cardioid dynamic microphone for gaming and streaming, featuring Voice Isolation Technology, adjustable DSP, Auto Level Mode, Real-time Denoiser, 5-band EQ, Smart Audio Presets, and a headphone output. The equalizer and Smart Presets-with dedicated processing chains for speech, vocals, and musical instruments-are among the key new features that set this second generation of the MV6 USB microphone with built-in audio interface and DSP apart.
The Shure MV6 Gen 2 represents the second generation of USB microphones developed by Shure specifically for gamers and streamers who want to achieve a more defined and controlled voice pickup than that of a headset or a simple built-in microphone, without having to set up a traditional chain consisting of a microphone, audio interface, and external processors. Its architecture combines a dynamic capsule with a cardioid polar pattern and a digital processing engine integrated into the microphone. The DSP handles functions such as Auto Level Mode, Real-time Denoiser, Digital Popper Stopper, equalization, and presets, while the USB-C connection transmits audio, power, and control signals through a single cable. The result is a plug-and-play system in which most of the processing required for the vocal signal is performed directly by the MV6 Gen 2.
Shure developed this second generation while maintaining the ease of use of the original MV6, significantly increasing the available control over signal processing-with features such as Auto Level Mode and Real-time Denoiser now user-adjustable-and adding a 5-band EQ and three Smart Audio Presets dedicated to speech, singing, and instruments.
One of the central features of the Shure MV6 Gen 2 is Voice Isolation Technology, which refers not to a single processor but to the behavior of the entire signal acquisition chain. The dynamic capsule, cardioid polar pattern, and onboard digital processing work together to prioritize the signal coming from the front and limit the impact of off-axis sounds and ambient noise. This setup is particularly well-suited for typical gaming and streaming setups, where keyboard clicks, computer hum, fan noise, or other ambient sounds may be present alongside the voice.
Shure therefore considers the acoustic and digital components to be parts of the same solution: the capsule's directionality comes into play during the recording phase, while the DSP subsequently allows you to control the level, noise, plosives, and tonal character of the voice.
In gaming and streaming, the voice level can change very quickly: you can go from speaking in a low voice to a significantly louder exclamation without changing your distance from the microphone. The MV6 Gen 2's Auto Level Mode is designed specifically to compensate for these variations by maintaining a consistent voice level in real time. Unlike the previous generation, its operation is no longer simply automatic: the user can adjust the Target Level and the speed at which the system reacts to dynamic changes.
Shure offers three target levels (Low, Medium, and High) and different adjustment times. A "Fast" setting can be used when the content features significant dynamic variations, while Shure recommends a "Slow" response for longer sessions where maintaining greater level consistency is the primary goal. It is therefore not merely a simple automatic gain control function.
The Real-time Denoiser has also evolved compared to the first MV6. The processor reduces ambient noise in real time and allows you to directly adjust its intensity. This means that noise reduction doesn't necessarily have to be set to maximum. In a noisy environment, you can increase the Denoiser's intensity to focus the pickup more on the voice. In an acoustically treated environment, on the other hand, you can reduce its intensity, maintaining a more open sound and capturing more of the ambient atmosphere. Shure explicitly describes this control as a way to determine how much of your surroundings should be heard in the stream, ranging from greater vocal isolation to a more natural recording.
Plosive consonants such as P and B can generate strong low-frequency transients when speaking close to a microphone's capsule. Digital Popper Stopper is the system developed by Shure to recognize these events and digitally attenuate them. The processing takes place directly within the MV6 Gen 2, allowing you to suppress plosives without necessarily having to use a traditional pop filter placed in front of the microphone. This feature is also part of the onboard processing chain and can be managed through the MOTIV apps.
With the MV6 Gen 2, Shure introduces a 5-band equalizer that allows you to directly adjust the tonal character of the voice. The EQ can be used to adjust aspects such as body, warmth, presence, and brightness, tailoring the microphone's response to the user's voice or the type of content. The adjustments are processed by the internal DSP and therefore do not require the use of an external equalizer within streaming or recording software.
For those who do not want to adjust individual bands directly, Shure also offers the Tone control, featuring three preset settings: Dark, Natural, and Bright. You can start by simply selecting the desired general profile and then switch to the 5-band EQ when more precise control is needed.
Another new feature of the second generation is the Smart Audio Presets, which aren't simply three different equalization settings but three processing configurations designed for different sound sources. The Speech preset, intended for gaming, streaming, chat, and spoken voice, uses Auto Level Mode, Real-time Denoiser, and Digital Popper Stopper. It is therefore the configuration that makes the most use of the available processing to keep the voice intelligible and controlled.
With the Singing preset, Shure disables the Denoiser, avoiding the application of the same processing intended for speech to a sung vocal performance. Finally, the Instrument preset aims for an unprocessed signal path to achieve a more natural capture of the instrument.
This structure allows the MV6 Gen 2 to be used beyond pure gaming: you can switch from communication during a gaming session to a vocal or instrumental recording without having to manually reconfigure the entire DSP setup.
An important feature of the MV6 Gen 2's architecture is that processing is performed onboard-that is, within the microphone itself. The Shure MOTIV apps allow you to configure the system, but settings can be saved and recalled, maintaining a consistent workflow across desktops, tablets, and mobile devices.
You can therefore configure Auto Level, Denoiser, equalization, and presets via the MOTIV apps and save the settings directly to the microphone. This way, whether switching from a computer to a mobile device or from one app to another, the MV6 Gen 2 retains the configured processing settings without relying solely on streaming or recording software.
Digital functions are controlled via the Shure MOTIV software ecosystem. It is available on computers, while on mobile devices, the MV6 Gen 2 is compatible with the MOTIV app. These apps allow you to configure onboard processing, adjust the tonal character, manage Auto Level and Denoiser, and save presets for use in future sessions.
Setup can therefore be very simple for those who want to get started quickly with a Smart Preset, but it also offers a second level of control for those who wish to more precisely customize dynamic response, noise reduction, and equalization.
The microphone features a 3.5mm mini-jack headphone output that allows you to listen directly to the MV6's signal along with audio from the connected device. Direct monitoring eliminates the latency introduced by a fully software-based monitoring path, while MOTIV Mix lets you adjust the balance between the microphone signal and system audio. For gaming and streaming, this allows you to simultaneously monitor your own voice and the audio played by your computer without needing a separate audio interface.
The top of the Shure MV6 Gen 2 microphone features a tap-to-mute control, which allows you to mute the signal with a simple tap. Muting occurs directly at the microphone, without having to open any software and without introducing audible clicks or latency. To prevent accidental activation, the control can also be disabled via the MOTIV apps.
The Shure MV6 Gen 2 uses a USB-C port to connect to the host device. Digital audio, power, and control are all handled through the same cable, eliminating the need for an external power supply or audio interface. The microphone is plug-and-play and does not require dedicated drivers. Shure states compatibility with PC, Mac, iOS, and Android, as well as MFi (Made for iPhone and iPad) certification. A/D conversion occurs at 24-bit/48 kHz, while the connection meets USB Audio Class 2 requirements with USB bus power.
Gaming and streaming are the primary applications for which the MV6 Gen 2 was developed, but its architecture also allows it to be used in other contexts where voice plays a central role. Shure states that it is compatible with major video conferencing platforms, allowing you to switch from gaming and streaming to calls, meetings, and presentations while using the same capture and processing system.
The inclusion of Singing and Instrument presets further expands its range of use to include vocal and musical content production, while the direct connection to computers, tablets, and smartphones allows for a particularly compact setup.
The Shure MV6 Gen 2 microphone comes ready for use on a desk, thanks to the included 12cm desktop stand with an isolating base, designed to reduce the transmission of vibrations from the surface to the microphone. The standard thread also allows you to mount the microphone on other compatible stands when you want to free up desk space or adjust its positioning.
The second generation does not alter the fundamental design principles. The cardioid dynamic capsule, USB-C connection, Digital Popper Stopper, tap-to-mute feature, 3.5 mm headphone output, and compatibility with MOTIV apps remain the same. The main differences, however, concern the level of control available on the DSP. The previous MV6 already featured Auto Level Mode and Real-time Denoiser, while on the MV6 Gen 2, both become adjustable. Added to these are the 5-band EQ and the new Smart Audio Presets: Speech, Singing, and Instrument. The included accessories have also been updated: the stand remains 12 cm, while the included USB-C to USB-C cable has been extended from 1 meter to 2 meters.
