Case Study: Sound System at the Biathlon Center "Grogg," Martell

Project Overview

The newly extended Biathlon Center "Grogg" in Martell, South Tyrol, aimed to provide high-quality sound across the entire area. The project was led by Randolf Aster, who was responsible for the overall planning and coordination. On-site, a qualified team took over the technical management and ensured the flawless installation and commissioning of the system.

TRIKON ProAudio | Visual | Lighting was entrusted with this ambitious project, collaborating with Italian loudspeaker manufacturer FBT to develop an advanced audio solution suitable for sporting events, presentations, and musical performances.

Technical Implementation

1. Audio Distribution via Fiber Optic

To ensure reliable, latency-free audio transmission throughout the area, a system based on fiber optic cables was implemented. This enables lossless signal transmission over long distances, ensuring uniform and clear sound coverage in every part of the center.

2. Flexible Access Points

A standout feature of the system is the ability to connect as a speaker, presenter, or DJ at four strategic points across the venue. This offers versatile usage, whether for sporting events, live presentations, or musical performances.

Mobile Control

A key strength of the system is its ability to be remotely controlled from any point on the site via iPad. Through an intuitive user interface, volume, signal sources, and other parameters can be adjusted in real-time. This significantly simplifies system management and allows for quick responses to situational requirements.

Components Used

FBT Speakers

FBT’s SHADOW series speakers were used for sound distribution:

FBT SHADOW 112 HC: These high-performance, weather-resistant speakers are ideal for large outdoor areas, offering excellent speech intelligibility and precise sound reproduction.

FBT SHADOW 114 S: The subwoofers provide powerful, dynamic bass, particularly effective for musical events.

FBT MDA4500 Amplifier

The FBT MDA4500 amplifier powers the speakers, delivering a stable, clear, and distortion-free sound, even at high volumes.

Signal Management

The signal management system consists of:

Allen & Heath AHM-16: A flexible audio manager for controlling and routing signals.

Allen & Heath SQ Dante 32x32 Audio Card: This card enables seamless integration into the Dante network, ensuring precise and lossless audio transmission.

AUDINATE Dante AVIO Adapters: These adapters allow various analog and digital devices to be integrated into the Dante network, enhancing system flexibility.

Results and Benefits

1. Crystal-Clear Sound Quality

Thanks to the high-quality FBT speakers and fiber optic transmission, uniform and clear sound is guaranteed throughout the venue.

2. Flexibility and Ease of Use

The ability to connect to the system from different points provides event organizers with immense flexibility, allowing announcements or musical performances from various locations.

3. Future-Proof System

The use of Dante audio technology ensures easy expandability and guarantees the system’s long-term viability.

Conclusion

With the successful installation of the sound system at the Biathlon Center "Grogg," TRIKON ProAudio | Visual | Lighting, in collaboration with FBT and other partners, has delivered a high-level technical achievement. The system offers the perfect combination of sound quality, flexibility, and technological innovation—an outstanding example of advanced audio technology in an outdoor setting.
