Refined for improved speed and performance in low-light conditions, the 24.2MP full-frame Exmor R BSI CMOS sensor and BIONZ X image processor realize an impressive continuous shooting speed of 10fps and enhanced autofocus performance for faster, more reliable subject tracking along with wide frame coverage. This updated fast hybrid AF system uses a combination of 693 phase-detection points and 425 contrast-detection areas for faster focus acquisition in a variety of lighting conditions and also maintains focus on subjects more effectively. In addition to speed and AF, processing improvements also help to achieve greater image clarity and noise reduction across the entire sensitivity range from ISO 100-51200, which can be further extended to ISO 50-204800. Video recording capabilities have also been expanded for better quality when recording UHD 4K video with the full width of the full frame sensor to minimize moiré and aliasing. In addition, to the benefit of both photos and video operations, the a7 III uses 5-axis SteadyShot INSIDE sensor-shift image stabilization, which is now effective in minimizing the appearance of camera shake by up to 5 stops.

In addition to simple updates to the imaging system, the body design of the a7 III has also been revised to include a 3.0” 922k-dot rear LCD touchscreen display, which has a tilting design to better support working from high and low angles. The camera is equipped with a 2.36 m-pixel OLED EVF ViewFinder that allows bright, clear and high-resolution monitoring. For greater shooting flexibility, there are now two SD memory card slots and a larger NP-FZ100 battery is also used to achieve up to approximately 710 shots per charge. Suitable for using the camera in difficult conditions, the magnesium alloy frame and weather sealing also make the a7 III resistant to dust and moisture.
