Optimized video, optimized sensitivity, optimized speed: the Sony Alpha a7S III sets a new standard for full-frame mirrorless cameras.
A redesigned 12.1MP Exmor R BSI CMOS sensor and updated BIONZ XR image processor offer faster performance, better noise reduction and wider dynamic range, along with 4K UHD 120p video recording and 10-bit 4:2:2 internal sampling.
Video is the a7S III's primary application, and sensor and processor improvements enable faster read speeds and significantly reduced rolling shutter, along with high-bitrate internal recording, 16-bit raw output via full-size HDMI port, and flexible motion control with variable frame rate selection.
The a7S III also eliminates recording time limitations and features HLG for direct HDR production, as well as S-Log2/S-Log3 gamma profiles for advanced HDR production with editing.
The updated sensor design also offers improved autofocus performance through 759 phase detection points, enabling intelligent subject tracking and real-time eye AF to ensure critical focusing on moving subjects in all shooting modes.
The sensor and BIONZ XR processor also enable impressive sensitivity with an expanded range of ISO 40-409600, as well as fast 10fps continuous shooting for up to 1000 consecutive RAWi images. In addition, image stabilization with 5-axis SteadyShot INSIDE sensor shifting is also available, which minimizes the appearance of camera movement by up to 5.5 stops.
In addition to the imaging resources, Sony has also made some changes to the physical design of the a7S III, including a rear LCD with a side-folding hinge design and an impressive 9.44 million-dot OLED electronic viewfinder.
The camera's menu system has also been updated for more intuitive navigation, and the body design contributes to better heat dissipation for better continuous shooting capability. In addition, the two memory card slots support operation with CFexpress Type-A or SD UHS-II memory cards for flexible and fast file storage.
A newly developed 12.1MP full-frame CMOS sensor now features a back-illuminated Exmor RS design for better clarity and lower noise, along with an impressive sensitivity range of ISO 80-102400 with an expanded ISO range of 40-409600.
The updated sensor design also offers readout speeds twice as fast as previous generations and, when combined with the redesigned BIONZ XR image processor, a 3x reduction in rolling shutter and up to 8x acceleration of overall camera processing and control.
The combination of sensor and processor also contributes to a wide dynamic range, which is up to 14 stops for photos and 15 stops for video, and 10-fps continuous shooting for up to 1000 uncompressed RAW files.
It is possible to record up to UHD 4K at frame rates of up to 120p, using full pixel readout 1:1 without binning.
Internal 4:2:2, 10-bit sampling is also possible in all recording modes. When recording externally via the full-sized HDMI-A port, 16-bit raw output is also possible for even better sound reproduction and post-production flexibility.
Two codecs have also been developed: XAVC HS, which uses HEVC/H.265 encoding to preserve more detail at smaller bit rates, and XAVC S-I, an intraframe codec designed for consistent performance and quality at bit rates up to 600 Mb/s.
