The JBL M2 Master Reference Monitors are large-format speakers designed for professional use in music production and post-production studios in medium- to large-sized environments, as well as for high-end, premium home theater applications. The M2 monitors feature the new D2 Compression Driver technology: they use two diaphragms and two voice coils to extend the high-frequency response while maintaining very low distortion even at extreme sound pressure levels. The D2 tweeters are paired with 15-inch 2216DN Differential Drive woofers, which also feature a dual voice coil constructed with patented wiring for a more linear output, delivering a frequency response from 20 Hz to 40 kHz with a maximum sound pressure level of 123 dB SPL. Another innovation is the LSR ("Linear Spatial Reference") technology adopted to design a new waveguide that evens out both the on-axis and off-axis performance of the tweeter up to the 800 Hz crossover point. This technology was developed primarily with the understanding that in large spaces, listeners want a good listening experience almost everywhere-not just on-axis-to ensure an imperceptible transition between the two drivers and a coherent soundstage. JBL recommends using Crown I-Tech 5000 HD power amplifiers (one per speaker) or a Crown I-Tech 4x3500HD power amplifier for optimal bi-amping; the I-Tech series power amplifiers feature high-definition DSP developed by BSS and settings specifically optimized for use with the M2 monitors; the amplifier's digital processing also allows for the implementation of an ideal crossover tailored to personal needs and specifications, or the saving of various equalization presets for diverse listening scenarios. The Harman HiQnet System Architect software provides access to the management and configuration of the DSP inside the Crown I-Tech amplifier; The DSP controls the calibration of the entire system and offers various solutions to room nonlinearity issues, ensuring a high degree of accuracy, particularly at the low frequencies characteristic of the listening environment.
