Radial Engineering DiNet Dan-RX2

RADIAL ENGINEERING's DiNET DAN-RX 2 is a Dante Stereo endpoint that converts digital network signal to analog 24bit/96kHz, with over 100db of dynamics, Balanced XLR outputs allow connection to mixers, amplifiers or powered speakers, also features headphone output with level control useful for personal monitoring.

Notable features

Radial DAN-RX 2 is a 24-bit / 96kHz 2-channel digital-to-analog terminal that allows the user to send audio from a Dante network for connection to professional audio systems. Developed by Audinate, the Dante protoollo has become the standard for digital audio distribution in professional audio. Using standard Ethernet networks, all connected Dante devices can communicate and manage audio with each other with very low latency. DAN-RX 2 provides an easy way to take a stereo signal from the Dante network and convert it to analog audio for monitoring at any location without the need for additional equipment.

DAN-RX 2 has XLR outputs for connection to balanced professional audio equipment such as microphone inputs on a mixing board or directly to an amplifier or active speaker. In live audio applications, DAN-RX 2 can be used to return audio to the stage or to route audio to smaller PA systems or recorders placed in remote rooms within a venue. There is also a 3.5-mm headphone output with level control for audio checks before connecting to the PA system or to monitor locally with headphones, useful at events where many people need to listen with personal monitoring systems.

DAN-RX 2 has 24-bit / 96 kHz analog converters for excellent audio quality. Connecting to the Dante network is simple-simply plug the Ethernet jack into any networked audio system using a standard Cat5e or Cat6 cable. DAN-RX 2 will accept Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) power, but an adapter is also included for use when PoE is not available. Once connected, DAN-RX 2 will appear as a 2-channel output device in the Dante controller software and on other Dante network-enabled devices. DAN-RX 2 is the easiest way to convert a stereo signal from Dante to analog.

DiNET DAN-RX 2 Usage and Applications

Using DAN-RX 2 to connect to a small PA system

Diagram for sending a stereo signal to small PA systems in crowded environments or to remote rooms within a venue.

Using DAN-RX 2 for distribution in the press room

Recording systems are often placed in rooms away from the press conference. DAN-RX 2 provides an easy way to send audio to these rooms and connect directly to a recorder or even to feed a pres box.

Using DAN-RX 2 for personal monitoring

The dedicated headphone output on DAN-RX 2 allows 'use as a personal monitoring system. The sound engineer can create a unique mix for musicians, producers, or any of the staff who need to monitor a signal anywhere on the network.

Radial DiNET DAN-RX 2 is designed to integrate seamlessly with existing Dante devices. Basic settings and connections are described below.

Quick Start Guide

Before making any connections, always make sure that amplifiers or speakers are turned off or off to protect sensitive components from transients that may occur when plugging in or turning on various components.

Turning on DAN-RX 2

Connections

Connect two standard low-impedance XLR cables from the LEFT and RIGHT outputs to the inputs of the PA system or recorder. These XLR outputs conform to the AES standard and are balanced to handle cables up to 100 meters long without noise, and are suitable for connecting DAN-RX 2 to consoles, preamplifiers and power amplifiers. The signal level in these outputs is controlled by the audio playback source.

Audio connections for PA systems or recording systems with balanced cables up to 100 meters.

IMPORTANT WARNING: DAN-RX 2 does not require phantom power. DAN-RX 2 is equipped with blocking capacitors to prevent damage from DC voltage, but for best results, make sure phantom power is turned off when you connect it to the mic input of a mixer.

Using the headphone amplifier

DAN-RX 2 has a dedicated stereo headphone output. The 3.5 mm output (⅛) is designed for use with earphones or standard TRS stereo headphones wired with tip = left, ring = right, and sleeve = ground. The volume control on DAN-RX 2 affects the headphone output only, as it is designed for monitoring or to set the level of the XLR outputs.

Caution DAN-RX 2 is designed for professional use. The headphone amplifier is very powerful and is capable of developing high sound levels that could damage your hearing. Always make sure that the volume control is set to minimum (fully counterclockwise) when you connect the headphones and slowly increase the level until you reach a satisfactory volume. If no signal is present, make sure that audio is sent to the unit via the Dante Controller software.

All headphones are not the same! Always start with the volume at low levels when activating the headphones. Although DAN-RX 2 is designed to work with headphones of different impedances, the volume level can change drastically from headphone to headphone.

Warning for headphone use: Very powerful amplifier

As with all products capable of producing high sound pressure levels (SPLs), users must take great care to avoid hearing damage from prolonged exposure. This is especially important applied to headphones, when listening is prolonged with high SPL that can cause tinnitus and lead to partial or complete hearing loss. Keep in mind the recommended exposure limits within your jurisdiction and follow them strictly. • Device with analog stereo outputs for Dante networks
  • XLR balanced outputs for mic or line level connections
  • Built-in headphone amplifier for personal monitoring
  • 24bit/96kHz digital-to-analog conversion
  • PoE: Power for DAN-RX 2 can be supplied via Ethernet (PoE) from a PoE-compatible network switch or from a separate PoE injector. Once power is available, the PoE LED indicator on the side panel lights up and DAN-RX 2 is ready for use.
  • Power: The included 15VDC adapter is provided for use if PoE power is not available. Once the DAN-RX 2 is connected to the Ethernet switch, connect the adapter. The +15VDC side panel lights up and DAN-RX 2 is ready for use. As a backup option, DAN-RX 2 is designed to be able to have PoE power and the 15VDC adapter at the same time. If one is turned off, the other maintains power without switching noise.
  • Ethernet connection: DAN-RX 2 connects to an Ethernet switch with a standard CAT5e or CAT6 cable. After connecting the Ethernet switch to a computer with Dante Controller software active, DAN-RX 2 appears as an available receiving device.
