The ISA C8X is a professional 26-in/28-out USB-C audio interface in a 2-rack-unit format, designed for recording studios. It features eight microphone preamps, including two authentic ISA preamps with Lundahl transformers, balanced inserts, selectable impedance, a high-pass filter, and Console and 430 Air analog modes, alongside six low-noise mic preamps with Air and Drive. The I/O configuration includes 2 front-panel instrument inputs, 8 fixed-level line inputs, 12 balanced line outputs for monitor setups up to 7.1.4, 2 Class AB headphone outputs, plus dual ADAT ports, S/PDIF, MIDI In and Out, and Word Clock. RedNet 24-bit/192 kHz converters and full remote control via Focusrite Control 2, with advanced routing, recall, and Auto Gain management on all eight preamps.
The two ISA preamps feature Lundahl LL1538 transformers and represent a modern evolution of the classic design. They offer up to 79 dB of gain, selectable input impedance, balanced hardware inserts, a 75 Hz high-pass filter, and both step and fine gain control. The Console and 430 Air modes-entirely analog and selectable via relays-introduce controlled saturation, greater punch in the low frequencies, and an openness in the highs inspired by the ISA 430 MkII channel strip.
Console mode is not simply a voicing option, but a dedicated analog circuit that introduces progressive saturation based on the input level, allowing for behavior similar to that of a console-driven preamp stage with fine control over the balance between input and output.
ISA preamps feature a two-stage gain control system, consisting of stepped adjustment in 10 dB increments and fine adjustment in 1 dB steps. This architecture allows for extremely precise management of the input level, while maintaining consistency when recalling presets and ensuring session repeatability. The combined behavior of the two controls covers the entire dynamic range up to 79 dB, ensuring accurate calibration even on low-output sources such as dynamic or ribbon microphones.
Impedance selection in ISA preamps does not merely affect the level; it directly modifies the frequency response and dynamic behavior of the connected microphone. Higher impedance settings tend to preserve high frequencies and detail more effectively, while lower settings emphasize the microphone's natural resonances and produce a warmer, more focused character. This allows for an active approach to recording, where the preamp becomes an integral part of the tonal shaping process right from the tracking stage, reducing the need for subsequent corrective adjustments.
In addition to the ISA preamps, the ISA C8X interface features six high-transparency microphone preamps capable of delivering 69 dB of clean gain. Each channel includes Air mode to emphasize high-frequency presence and DSP Drive to add analog-style harmonics. This dual architecture allows you to choose between a more characterful path (ISA) and a more neutral but shapeable one, offering greater flexibility in handling diverse sources within the same session.
All signal paths benefit from the same 24-bit/192kHz conversion used in Focusrite RedNet systems, with 125 dB of dynamic range and extremely low distortion. This ensures recordings, monitoring, and mixes with a level of detail and consistency suitable for broadcast, immersive, and mastering-ready productions, while maintaining signal integrity even within complex analog chains.
The two front-panel instrument inputs, based on Lundahl transformers and featuring selectable impedance, are designed for guitars, basses, and electronic instruments, offering dynamic behavior and tonal response reminiscent of a high-end analog mixing console.
The eight line inputs are designed for patchbays and permanently wired outboard gear and operate at a fixed level with a direct path to the AD converter, completely bypassing the preamp stage. This approach shortens the signal path, increases available headroom, and ensures maximum transparency, making the ISA C8X particularly well-suited for complex studio setups and fixed installations.
Each input on the ISA C8X features physically separate connections for microphone (XLR), line (jack), and instrument, allowing you to leave all sources connected and select them directly from the front panel or via software. When set to line mode, the inputs operate at fixed gain and completely disable the preamp and control sections, maintaining an extremely direct and transparent signal path to the converter.
The twelve balanced line outputs support monitoring configurations ranging from stereo up to 7.1.4, with management of three monitor groups (Main, Alt 1, Alt 2) and professional levels up to +24 dBu, maintaining consistent alignment with the line inputs and connected outboard gear. The two Class AB headphone outputs, each with independent level control, offer high power, generous headroom, and proper handling of loads with varying impedances, making them suitable for both tracking and critical monitoring. Each monitoring group can be configured with different output combinations, up to the simultaneous use of all 12 analog outputs. This allows you to quickly switch from immersive configurations (7.1.4) to reference stereo or mono systems.
The monitor outputs feature an anti-thump system that reduces power-on transients, preventing spikes that could potentially damage speakers or harm the listener.
The ISA C8X is expandable via dual ADAT ports (up to 16 additional channels) and S/PDIF, as well as MIDI In/Out and Word Clock In/Out for integration into complex, synchronized digital systems. The Focusrite Control 2 software, available for desktop and mobile devices, allows for full remote control of gain, routing, Auto Gain, monitoring, and preset recall, even across multiple connected interfaces. The Auto Gain feature automatically sets the level on all eight preamps in just a few seconds, optimizing setup time and ensuring consistency across sources. This feature does more than just detect the input level; it also analyzes parameters such as preamp background noise, digital silence, crosstalk between channels, and non-musical transients. This approach allows you to set consistent and reliable levels even in complex multi-microphone configurations, significantly reducing the time required for initial gain staging.
The Focusrite ISA C8X is equipped with 5-pin MIDI DIN ports (In and Out) to function as a USB MIDI interface, allowing for direct control of external instruments without the need for additional hardware, integrating control and synchronization within the same system.
Through its ADAT connections, the ISA C8X can be integrated into expanded systems supporting up to 24 channels of simultaneous recording, using external preamps or other compatible interfaces. It can also operate in ADAT expansion mode, functioning as a conversion and preamp unit for existing systems, without the need for a direct USB connection.
The Focusrite ISA C8X allows for the complete recall of configurations via presets, including input, routing, mix, and monitoring parameters. Settings can be saved, exported, and imported between different systems, allowing you to replicate complex setups in different studio environments or remote sessions. This feature is particularly valuable in professional settings where consistency across sessions and quick setup are required.
The Focusrite ISA C8X includes Hitmaker Expansion, a comprehensive software suite that provides a selection of professional tools for production, recording, and mixing, developed in collaboration with some of the leading players in the audio industry. The package includes a collection of plug-ins and effects designed to cover the entire DAW workflow, from recording to finalization.
Among the most notable features is Brainworx's bx_console Focusrite SC, an accurate emulation of the ISA 110 and 130 modules that brings the dynamic behavior and tonal response of Focusrite's classic architecture into the DAW. This is complemented by Sonnox's Oxford Reverb, a highly flexible algorithmic reverb that allows you to build complex soundscapes with detailed control over spatial parameters, reflections, and decay.
The Hitmaker Expansion package extends the interface's capabilities, offering ready-to-use tools for creating vocal tracks, virtual instruments, dynamic processing, and mixing, all while maintaining consistency with the sonic character and design philosophy of the ISA series.
