Warm Audio WA-87 R2

In 2016 Warm Audio introduced one of the most emblazoned '87-style FET condenser microphones: the WA-87. Based on classic circuits from the 1960s, the WA-87's rich sound has become the preferred choice of many producers, engineers and home recording enthusiasts worldwide. It was the first microphone made by Warm Audio which was followed by many other successful designs. Since the release of the WA-87 in 2016 Warm Audio has gained even more experience, experience that led the company to see if it was possible to improve the quality of the WA-87 substantially without changing its cost: the result is the WA-87 R2 (Revision 2). The WA-87 is based on a classic 1960s circuit for what is universally recognized as one of the most valuable studio microphones ever designed. Warm Audio with the WA-87 has put a lot of resources into trying to get as close as possible to the sound of the vintage version. Thus the WA-87 R2 uses the highest quality components such as a Fairchild NOS transistor and WIMA wide-bandwidth polystyrene capacitors. The WA-87 R2 uses a custom output transformer just like the original unit, with the new version providing a higher output level and improved frequency response. Warm Audio used the same capsule as the WA-87, designed to the same specifications as the vintage unit. The result is an accurate sound replica of the most popular studio microphone in the history of sound recording! Just like the vintage unit, the WA-87 R2 is excellent for recording any sound source. The three polar diagrams (cardioid, omni and figure-of-eight) allow a wide variety of applications, and an 80Hz HPF filter reduces low-frequency rumble if necessary. The selectable -10dB pad is useful when you want to record extremely powerful sound sources without overloading the internal electronics.

The WA-87 R2 is contained in a heavier, stronger nickel-plated body, and the new round grille increases the space around the capsule. With authentic vintage warmth and smoother, more detailed high frequencies, this microphone has performance equal to microphones costing as much as five times more.
